While I have quibbles with the order of their list, it's hard to argue that these two authors don't love TV and didn't do their research. Shows that I had forgotten about made the list, as well as shows that I never thought I'd see on any best-of list, and that was a pleasant surprise. Some of the essays are surprisingly short, but no show that I thought had to be on the list was left out, so I can't have too many complaints.The show with what I thought was the best finale ever was actually the show they chose for that as well. If you've seen the show, then I don't even think you could argue for anything else. (Spoiler-free review. Buy the book if you want to know which show.)I also appreciated that no currently airing show was considered, as any kind of art needs some time to be fully appreciated.If you love TV now (or have in the past), you should't hesitate to buy this book.

I have enjoyed reading Sepinwall's episode reviews for many shows, such as Lost, Mad Men, Game of Thrones, and so forth. I also enjoyed Zoller Seitz' book of critical commentaries on Mad Men, so I knew that TV (The Book) would be an enjoyable read for me.This is a valuable book for thinking about TV in a serious, intelligent way rather than merely looking down upon TV as idle trash. Sepinwall and Zoller Seitz' opening debate is excellent to read. I loved reading about their views on the merits of The Sopranos versus The Wire versus The Simpsons as the greatest show of all time. I learned about many new shows as I read through their ranking of the best 100 shows in American history. I have added some new shows to my list of series that I need to watch some day (Freaks and Geeks, Twin Peaks, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, etc).I would say the only drawback to the book is that it became a little tedious to read every review and every page, especially for shows which I do not really plan on ever watching. However, overall I would recommend this book to anyone interested in TV in a serious way, or if you are just looking to learn about important shows that you might have missed. Their writing is clear, often witty and humorous, and enlightening.

The book is interesting for the most part and I have enjoyed plugging though it. I appreciate their efforts in trying to rank the greats of all time in television, but it sure "feels" front loaded. What I mean is that most of the "best shows ever" are super recent in the grand scope of television history. I understand that television has taken an upward swing in quality, in many cases, but there are shows that somehow have been pushed down the list of these gentlemen, that frankly shouldn't be.If you are person who loves lists, as I do, this book will satisfy your need to disagree with their results (if you are anything like me). So, enjoy and I look forward to seeing your review.

A superb reference with respect to television's finest examples of drama and comedy. In addition, a very stimulating, seriously thoughtful, and keenly observed dissection of the qualities that made the selected shows so special and/or influential. Nice (and rare) to have such scholarly, thoughtful analysis that (in all but a few instances) is as understandable and accessible as it is sophisticated.

If you're an entertainment geek and enjoy debating and discussing television or movies, you'll enjoy this book. I don't agree with all of their rankings and even strongly disagree with some, but these guys make their cases for and against shows in an engaging way. It's the kind of book where you'll read their take on a show you love and shake your head and say "Exacty!," or read their take on a show you hate and say out loud, "What is he smoking?" But that's fun. You feel like you're involved in a discussion. I liked it.

I am not American, and as such I have not seen most of the TV shows in the "Pantheon". But I do have a certain affinity for scripted TV, an affinity that has grown to the uber-availability of content these days. I started actively watching TV shows in 2005, and haven't stopped since. Luckily, just about that time the so-called "Golden Era of TV" was about to burst, and burst it did.This book is terrific in that regard and it manages to scale down all the shows and presents a great starting point for anyone who wants to start watching great TV. Not to mention it has amazing insights into shows I already love and adore (hello there Cheers, hey, good seeing you Tony!). Sepinwall and MZS do a great job in carrying across their thoughts and while ranking such a subjective thing as fiction is inherently difficult, they make it fun and inclusive. I loved their scoring model, which they explain in detail at the beginning of the book, not to mention the essays accompanying each show. The clarity of their thoughts makes the reader want to see the show so bad. I wanna rewatch half the shows I watched after reading this book. It invokes that feeling!All in all, a great read for TV fans, old and new, young and old, novices and buffs.

If you are a fan of television then this book is a must read. Not only for the lists but for suggestions of shows to catch up on that you might have missed. The authors give cogent reasons for where they rank each show. While I did not always agree with the rankings I respected the rankings because they defended each one in an intelligent manner.The book had more depth than one would expect. It was an enjoyable read.

I didn't always agree with the placements of shows in this book, but both Sepinwall and Seitz are excellent writers who do a good job of providing a reason as to why everything on their list was good and mattered to the history of American television. I also appreciated how much they provided coverage to plenty of shows that were made before THE SIMPSONS and TWIN PEAKS came along. Sometimes, it feels as if everyone just forgot that there were good American television before George HW Bush became President.

Buying school books sucks. It's just another way that students become more and more in debt trying to get an education. I turned to Amazon for my last 3 courses and did rather well. Saving quite a bit over my college bookstore prices. However, this book was extremely much more expensive than any of the prior books ordered on Amazon. I figured that either it was enormous, or much larger in size (page length/width) than normal books, so proceeded with my order. I paid 160$ for this tiny, little, used book. Are you kidding me???? Not only was it used, it was written 9 years ago, isn't even a normal 9x6" size, and barely an inch thick. What the heck did I just pay for???? This was ridiculous. Looks like my education has taught me nothing thus far.

This book is POORLY structured for an Introductory Procurement course. Very unorganized. I DO NOT recommend

I am sure there are more books out there that make supply management much easier to grasp and enjoy. I found this book boring and somewhat out of date.

If you have a class and have to read it, you just have to read it. It's loaded with great information, but it will hurt you a little in the process of extracting it. It is a little dry. Buy hey, good things come from hard work. So get to reading it....

International version - no different than the actual text - pages are the same. Would recommend.

Slow search is the only thing that prevents it from getting 5 star, but that seems to be an issue with the Kindle textbook format.

Good book. I learned a great deal from it.

I grabbed this for my little nephew he's almost 4. I thought it would make a great Christmas gift since he LOVES trains. The book has great pictures but the writing is for older kids and there is a lot of it. Probably for ages 8 and up. He just looked at the pictures then tossed the book. Usually we sit down and read them together but it's to wordy and not geared towards small minds.

I was looking for a basic text, with "beyond basic" appeal, to provide some understanding of how trains work, and I bought this book for my own use. The purchase was right on track - I learned a lot! I feel this is a book to be shared with, not handed to, a child. Once a child has been introduced to it in the company of an interested other, even very young children can delight in it. Note to reader: Guide the attention of the child with whom you share the experience to the *cat* in the first (information-rich) two-page spread and have fun looking for a coordinating image in similar illustrations that follow.

When my son found this book at the local library, I couldn't wait to write a gushing review. I am really delighted with this book. The more we read it together, the more impressed I am with the author and illustrator. This book is organized so that you go back in time, viewing the trains of earlier and earlier generations. (This is much more interesting than it sounds. Stay with me!) The narrator is a boy who says that when he goes up, he wants to drive a train like his dad. Then we hear about how his dad also wanted to be an engineer because that is what HIS father was, and so forth. We are brought back in time all the way to the earliest American trains (and the boy's great great great great great grandfather--kids love the repetition too). The final scene is a futuristic train that the boy imagines driving when he grows up. Every other page spread on the book contains short text about a child wanting to drive trains like his father (or mother in one case!) and a gorgeous illustration of a train. If you look carefully, you'll see that every scene is shown from the exact same vantage point, with the same mountains in the background. Not only do the trains change, but so do the stations, the tracks, and the buildings around them. The illustration style is lush, and every one of these images features a different cat somewhere in the scene. My son loves to search for them. The alternating page spreads contain extended text and additional images about the era of train history depicted on the previous page. I have read many, many books on trains because my son gobbles up anything we can find on them, and yet I learned many new things from this book. For instance, did you know that when multiple engines are used to pull a train, they are called a "consist"? Or that brakemen on old trains had to run along the tops of the cars to set the brakes on each one manually? The level of detail is not a whole lot greater than most other non-fiction train books for kids, but it seems to find the most unique and telling details. I would recommend this book for any train child ages 3 and up. You won't mind reading this one over and over. For younger children, just read the text on alternating pages and the captions of the pictures on the more detailed sections.

My three year old absolutely loves this book. The author does an amazing job incorporating history and valuable information into a story that we can read over and over.

This is a fantastic little paperback about trains. The cover is nice plastic coated paper, so it wouldn't easily tear. The pages are thick paper, good for tiny fingers. My 4 year old nephew will love it!

My son, who is 2, picked this up at the library and loved it so much we got him his own copy. It has a little history of trains as told through generations of a railroad working family as well as some nice diagrams of the train's parts. It is my son's favorite book!

Purchased as a birthday gift for a 6-year old boy who loves trains. According to his mother he loves this book, as does his 2 1/2-year old brother.

In this compelling sociological narrative, Rios describes the problems facing black and Latino youth as they come of age. A former gang member who went on to earn a Ph.D. at Berkeley, Rios returned to his old Oakland neighborhood to shadow 40 young men as they dealt with poverty, violence, and institutionalized racism. As he recounts their life stories, Rios deftly balances analysis with vivid anecdotes about uninterested educators, struggling parents, police brutality, and gang victimization. From elementary school on, teachers and law enforcement mark these boys as "dangerous" or "difficult," and harshly punish them for petty infractions. Once they accumulate "negative credentials," the young men are subject to increased surveillance—and are consequently more likely to end up in prison. Rios terms this criminalization "the youth control complex," and explains how it systematically deprives boys of their dignity and their ability to succeed at school or in the job market. Such an amazing book. Victor Rios brings to light the challenges that marginalized youth face in urban areas. Challenges.. that crush these kids sense of self worth and any hope of achieving a life outside of crime. His research follows the lives of 40 boys in the gang infested areas of Oakland, California. He exposes a debilitating punitive system that places unjust discriminating stigmas on these boys at a very young age. In most cases.. prior to them ever having any involvement with crime. In fact several had never actually committed crimes but were treated as if they had.. simply by association due to circumstances beyond their control or because of how they looked. Behaviors commonly seen as that of a normal adolescent are instead interpreted as criminal behavior resulting in harsh punishments and berating by authority figures involved in the daily lives of these kids. Thus beginning the process of breaking down the potential for these boys to ever succeed in having a "normal" life in society. A life where they have the same rights as others to go to school, vote or simply obtain a job. When everywhere they turn they are faced with condemnation even when they are attempting to do the "right" thing determined by mainstream society or are being provoked to the point of having the primal response of retaliating to obtain the slightest sense of control over their fate... Dr. Rios tells how these boys while feeling broken and devalued.. become determined to have a sense of empowerment and belonging... and develop their own (many times detrimental) methods to obtaining some dignity as human beings or as "a man" even if it means giving up their chances to live in a free society. I say "primal response" because after reading the many stories of the unwarranted treatment of these kids.. I can't help but picture in my mind a scene of a dog being beaten by it's owner who out of desperation eventually attempts to bite back only to be faced with more brutality.Dr. Rios proposes an alternative system called the "Youth Support Complex". Unlike the criminal justice system called the "Youth Control Complex" currently in place that criminalizes marginalized youth and sets them on a path to a life of incarceration.. his program sets out to promote compassion and understanding for these youth to help improve the quality of their lives and support their reintegration back into society as productive citizens.It is a must read for all who are involved in the daily lives of our youth. Hopefully it will promote compassion and a deeper look into the individual child and his/her circumstances.

In Punished: Policing the Lives of Black and Latino Boys, by Victor Rios, the author conducts a field research examining the system of punitive social control that is developed in Oakland, California. In his research, he uses a method known as esthonography, the study of individuals through direct participation in there home-setting, but can also be described as shadowing, and observes 40 “at-risk” criminalized and marginalized youths in Oakland, California over the course of 3 years so that he can come to an understanding of the lives of Black and Latino boys. His goal is to “show the the failures of criminalization, the failures of using harshm stigmatizing, and humiliating forms of punishment to “correct” and “manage” marginalized youths, as well as to highlight the consequences that these methods have on young peoples trajectories.” (Rios 23). Throughout his research he uses the micro sociology approach. In this approach, he conducts many interviews and builds trust with the youths because without it the data he was collecting would not have been true or valid. The interviews helped Rios hear the youth’s side of the story and how they felt when they would receive the punishment or also known as the youth control complex; a term Rios created. The youth complex system is the conceptual framework for understanding the system of punishment that Rios came across when analyzing the everyday and institutional aspects of criminalization. Rios examines the significance that defiance and resistant have for inner-city boys. Resistant contradicts the idea that young Black and Latino men reject mainstream values and prefer to embrace the streets rather than try and improve. Many times, the authorities tried to help the youths but every time they did, the youths took it in a negative way and continued to do so in every situation encountered. For example, in the story of The Probation Officer, the officer would attempt to just say a simple hello but instead of saying hello back or an easy nice response, the youth would instead taunt and curse towards the officer. The youth would purposely make things worse by being defiant and by doing this only made the situation worse for the youth. Personally, I believe that his method and experiment he created was valid enough to say that in order to help someone you have to go to the core. You have to make an effort to understanding where they are coming from and what caused them to take action in what they did. It could all be because of living style, family, friends, area of living, etc. All these different factors can lead to the reason of negative choices. I also believe that Rios is valid when is comes to authority because since he was a former gang member and lived the same life style as the new generation of young men he could truly relate to them and get an understanding of where they are coming from and he can help them. Even though he didn't let his personal opinion or experience effect his judgment and assessment of his research, he never rationalized his data to one side so i believe that is why he is a valid source overall. To bring in conclusion, i believe that everyone can be helped if we took the time to truly understand and to listen. Often times criminalized youths are automatically judged and are never given the opportunity to speak out on their stories or since they get shut down they get the mindset of theres no hope so they give up. Often times, people involved in any type of crime end up getting help so that they can be better but the only way it can “work” to help the person is to understand the cause of their actions and from then on we can begin to develop solutions to help the person. The author and his research that he came up with goes to show that if people took the time to help and understand that we can help people around us by creating solutions.

I returned this one after reading 10%. The idea of reading a book my a man who grew up in Oakland gangs and became a PHD as an adult was_very_appealing. Once I started reading it, I couldn't have been more disappointed. If you are curious about this book from a sociology perspective, you might enjoy it. If like me, you were interested in immersive journalism and an educated perspective on a sub culture, go read " Why Do We Kill?: The Pathology of Murder in Baltimore ".

Wonderful book! Does an excellent job of digging deep into the lives of youth in Oakland and gives an amazing account of their daily struggles. Rios masterfully explains how the youth in Oakland (and the US more broadly) are increasingly surrounded with police-like institutions which severely damage their opportunities for success. I would definitely recommend the book for anyone who wants to have a better understanding of youth and what we might be able to do to alleviate the problems they face.

Rios offers a valuable collection of stories of the Black and Latino/a youth in the Oakland area. Punished is the story of his graduate work, shadowing students who were at high risk, criminalized and paroled. His dissection and illustration of the criminalization of colored and minority youth is well researched and very well written. This is an easy read and often hard to put down.

About the Author
Gerald Thomas Schuster received his Ph.D. in geophysics from Columbia University in 1984. He took up a faculty position at the University of Utah in 1985, where he is currently Professor of Geophysics and the founder and director of the Utah Tomography and Modeling/Migration (UTAM) consortium of oil, gas, and mining companies. He served as Chief Editor of the journal Geophysics from 2004 to 2005, and was a co-recipient of the 2007 Eotvos prize from the EAGE for the best paper in the journal Geophysical Prospecting. Professor Schuster has been invited to give short courses in seismic imaging and signal processing methods to major petroleum exploration companies throughout the world, and was the invited Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Distinguished Lecturer for 1998-1999.
