About the Author

GRACE DAVIE is professor emeritus in the Sociology of Religion at the University of Exeter UK and a senior adviser to the Impact of Religion Research Programme at Uppsala University. She is a past-president of the American Association for the Sociology of Religion (2003) and of the Research Committee 22 (Sociology of Religion) of the International Sociological Association (2002-06).

In 2000-01 she was the Kerstin-Hesselgren Professor at Uppsala, where she returned for extended visits in 2006-7, 2010 and 2012, receiving an honorary degree in 2008. She has also held visiting appointments at the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes (1996) and at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (1998 and 2003), both in Paris.

In addition to numerous chapters and articles, she is the author of Religion in Britain since 1945 (Blackwell 1994), Religion in Modern Europe (OUP 2000), Europe: the Exceptional Case (DLT 2002), and The Sociology of Religion (Sage 2007/2013); she is the co-author of Religious America, Secular Europe (Ashgate 2008), and co-editor of Predicting Religion (Ashgate 2003) and Welfare and Religion in 21st Century Europe (2 vols) (Ashgate 2010 and 2011).

The most complete of these studies was the Richards Report on Calcutta, prepared for the Calcutta Improvement Trust and published in 1914.

Its major concerns included the building and widening of roads, slum clearance and improvement, legislation, and suburban planning. As background, it included written and visual documentation of living conditions, through charts, photographs, and maps. Richards emphasized that conditions in Calcutta differed greatly from those in urban Britain, and made some allowance in that regard. In general, however, his report exemplifies the attempt by British planners, along with Indian elites, to impose their vision on colonial cities.

Richards’ report was well-received by leading British planners of the day. A notice in Garden Cities and Town Planning claimed that it was "the most complete report on town conditions and possibilities which has yet been issued". While the immediate impact of the report in Calcutta is moot - Richards was highly critical of the past practices of local officials, and his views were unpopular with his superiors - the Richards Reports remains a crucial insight into both the development of modern town planning and the colonial period in India.

A terrible story well told. It was hard to put this book down once I started reading it. Above all it is a story of the persistence of a family in their search for truth in the face of a disinterested justice system once law enforcement fails to do their job and double downs to reinforce their original mistakes. It is also a story that makes you think about the strange, automatic protection from accountability men of the cloth receive just by virtue of their occupation. An ordinary man would have faced much tougher questions on the night of Kari Baker's death. Baker isn't the first devil in sheep's clothing to grace the doors of the church and he won't be the last. But this story traces the sad truth of how many people are willing to cover up bad behavior in order to not give the church a bad rep. Wouldn't standing up for what's right be a better way to bring souls to God? Many Christian employers had the opportunity to foil this predator before Kari Baker was murdered. Iâ€™m not even finished yet with this book and Iâ€™m already back on Amazon researching my next Kathryn Casey book. She may well be my new favorite True Crime author. Just love the way she writes..... easy to follow and very engaging. This story is shocking and appalling. Totally engrossed in this!! Lol.All the better that Casey lives in Houston and most of her books are cases from Texas. I can relate well, living in the DFW area, and formerly having lived in Houston. Makes it even more interesting when you are reading about things that happen in such close proximity.

Matt Baker. Husband. Father. Rapist. Murderer. Sinister Minister. Yuck! I hate giving him the title of minister as he is so not worthy. I thought I knew everything there was to know about this narcissistic psycho from all of the news coverage. Turns out I was so wrong. Kathryn Casey delivers another extremely well-researched and written account of the man we thought we knew. What makes someone turn out the way Matt Baker did? Was it innate or learned behavior. Go inside this dark story and see for yourself the truly remarkable audacity of Matt Baker...throughout his entire life. Why didn't anyone stop him when they had the chance? This book contains all the details. I absolutely could not put it down! Kudos, Casey for another book deserving of 5 stars!

Kathryn Casey is one of my favorite true crime writers and this book is a great read. A pastor with a troubled history, a young divorcee who's the music minister's daughter and a wife who blindly supports her husband. There were a few places where the book kind of dragged, hence the four star rating. Those spots I kind of skimmed over but overall it was interesting and easy to read. Some repetitive details to help readers connect the dots which shows the amount of research that was done to take the case to court but could've use a lot less to get the point across.
